Volunteering at Clee Fields - what to expect and why it is important
At YMCA Humber, volunteers are an essential part of our service and our community, providing dedicated hours of their time to support people to transform their lives.
Volunteering can be one of the most rewarding roles you undertake and by providing YMCA Humber with your support you can help us change lives within our local community.
We recently spoke to Nathan, one of our Youth Sports Coaches, on the positive impact that working with young people can have and what potential volunteers can expect at our open community football sessions at Clee Fields. Here’s what he had to say…
What do people enjoy about working with young people?
“It gives us a chance to engage with different people from the community that come from all over the area to access our facilities, which is fantastic to see.”
What does the role involve at a typical community session at Clee Fields?
“We are down here making sure that the behaviour on the facility, and the way that they're playing with each other, is where we want it to be.”
What type of age ranges do you get attending the sessions?
“We attract anywhere from 7 to 18 year olds, so a wide range of young people come down to the facility.”
What do you think some of the positive impacts are on the community?
“It gives them somewhere to come after school. It’s a safe place for them as well. They know what to expect when they come here. They've got the opportunity to get stuff from the café, so refreshments, drinks and some food. It’s a really great place for young people to come to. The facility is all brand new, it’s excellent and to be fair to the young people, they respect the facility really well.”
What would you say to anyone who is considering volunteering?
“If you have a sporting background and you have an interest in working with people of a young age, it's a great place to be. It's a great place to build positive relationships through sport. Sport is a great tool, I believe, to get the behaviours out from young people that society and the wider public want to see.”
